Alberta’s Homeplace: Re-Indigenizing Motherhood
Alberta’s Homeplace is not just a place—it’s a revolution in motherhood. An ecovillage and intentional community designed specifically for Black single mothers and their children, it is a sanctuary that fosters healing, empowerment, and transformation. Named in honor of Alberta Hodges (b. 1919), whose life embodied resilience and brilliance, this visionary space is about more than survival—it’s about thriving in ways that honor our ancestors and the earth.
At Alberta’s Homeplace, we are redefining what it means to be a mother in a world that often marginalizes Black families. This is a place where motherhood is re-Indigenized, rooted in the wisdom of the earth, the cycles of nature, and the values of sustainability, self-sufficiency, and community care. It’s a space where we honor mothering as a sacred practice—a dynamic force of creation, care, and love that shapes the future of families, communities, and the planet itself.
Here, Black single mothers and their children are supported holistically, through programs that nurture not just survival, but empowerment—emotionally, socially, financially, and physically. At Alberta’s Homeplace, we believe that when mothers thrive, families flourish. And when families flourish, entire communities are transformed.
Our Community Goals
To build a powerful collective of mothers who dream, grow, and create together—sharing resources, wisdom, and strength. A space to rage against injustice, grieve our losses, and heal as one. Here, we support each other unconditionally, strengthening the sacred bond between mother and child, and deepening the unity of our community. Together, we rise, reclaiming our power and shaping a future of resilience and love.
Our Community Intention
To heal the deep, original attachment wounds caused by the violent legacy of colonization—wounds that have destabilized Black family systems and hindered Black mothers from thriving. This is a response to the chronic states of survival created by systemic oppression, offering a path to healing, empowerment, and the reclamation of the strength and stability Black mothers deserve.
Our Community Aims
Liberation through:
Intergenerational Healing: Reclaiming ancestral wisdom to break cycles of trauma and build lasting resilience.
Food Sovereignty & Land Stewardship: Empowering families with access to land to grow, nourish, and sustain themselves.
Economic Empowerment: Creating pathways to financial independence and self-sufficiency for long-term prosperity.
Improved Health Outcomes: Prioritizing holistic well-being to heal mind, body, and spirit, and create healthier futures.
Together, these pillars build a foundation of true liberation.
